New Avenues & Shooting For Myself

For a few, maybe several, years, I did very little in terms of my own photography. What I mean is that, yes, I had a camera in my hands, but I was not shooting for myself. There are a few avenues that I want to dive into, and do not have the right connections or have not asked the right questions. That all is beginning to change. Either, by simple, blind luck that I am falling into these opportunities. Or, it is life working out in mysterious, unexpected ways, if I let it.

2019 brought some very amazing opportunities and experiences my way. The first surprise happened when I reconnected with an old friend. One conversation led to another, and the next thing I know, I am taking photos of pole dancers and burlesque performers!

Most recently, I once again reconnected with a good friend over a photo of herself that she had posted. I reached out and asked her if she wanted to do a boudoir shoot.* She immediately agreed, mentioning she had always wanted to do one! Well, it went far beyond a traditional boudoir shoot, but we both got so much more out of it. Also, the fact that she felt confident afterwards, thanking me for the experience, means more to me than the photos ever will.

The bottom line is this - Whatever it is, whether it is photography or wanting to try something new, do it for yourself. Not for a career or money, or to be seen. Do it because you love it. And, let life happen. Do not attempt to control it. I can tell you I never would have gotten these experiences otherwise. The last piece of advice? Ask! What do you want? There are not too many instances where the consequence is any worse than a simple no.

*Bonus tip - Be professional and understand the relationship. In the case of asking my friend about boudoir, I understood our friendship and prior experience with photography. I also was very upfront about what I was asking for and why. For us, it was a two way street (and it always should be). I was seeking more experience in the genre and felt she was a good fit for the style I wanted. For her, she wanted the photos, the experience, and trying new things within it. It was a win-win. There is actually quite a bit I can say about working in such an intimate space, but I will leave that for later.
