Rat City Roller Derby Season 16 Opener

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to officially photograph the Debutante Brawl in Marysville, WA. It was a straight up slugfest between the two new Rat City teams, Danger Kittens v. Sockit Rockets. They brought the heat and are just killer additions to the league!

Life is weird and really surprising and rewarding when you simply ask. I had bought tickets to the bout and thought, “You know what? I am going to ask if they need a photographer. Worst they can say is no. I would still enjoy a hell of a match!” I forwarded my Instagram and told the league my situation and interests. One thing led to another and I was given full access!

I shot alongside two seasoned photographers who were super helpful, giving me several pointers. Anything from technical advice to real world tips on how to approach the match, the athletes, etc. I was so grateful for their hospitality and community!

As soon as the match began, I immediately realized I was dropped into the deep end! I was in a less than ideal position (inside of the track), and the athletes were just flying around the track! I was seriously not prepared for the sheer speed of the game. Once I had a chance, I quickly jumped out and photographed the bout from the outside. That’s when I caught my breath and really settled in to get some cool stuff!

In all, it was an absolute blast and an honor to be able to take photos for Rat City. A season opener, with two brand new teams, at that! I hope to shoot more bouts and keep getting better at my craft. I loved it, even when I was standing directly in the fire!

Here is a good collection of photographs. For more (of all sorts of my work), follow along on my other socials!
