First Film Roll Developed!
Yesterday, I headed to the school to develop my first roll of film. Our instructor threw a plethora of information at us in our first class session, with very little hands-on time. (None of which was in the actual dark room or sink, although we were shown the process.) Not having this experience, I was anxious about it all. However, when I walked in, I was pretty calm. I knew the only way out of the situation was to do it. To my surprise, it was actually quite easy!
I first practiced with junk film with the light on, so I could see where everything was and how to piece everything together. Then, I laid out everything (i.e. developing tank, film, etc.) on the table in an order that made sense to me. Off went the lights and I was on automatic from then on! The only snag was the darn canister opener... *looks down at the small stab wound on my finger* Haha... A rite of passage, I guess!
Once everything was locked in the tank, I headed out to the sink. (Lights! I could see again!) At first, I was worried about the temperature of the water and chemicals. Our instructor was very clear that the first step was crucial and needed to be an exact 68 degrees. Well, given the fact it was 94 freaking degrees outside, I am sure it messed with the indoor temperatures a bit. Both myself and my classmate developed at slightly higher temperatures, but as you can see from the photo above, everything appears to have turned out great! It was just a matter of following the steps. If you do this, you should be golden! Very straightforward process. I am excited to learn more about film!
I had my second class yesterday, too, which is The Narrative in Photography. I will have to write another entry on that and my whole photography school experience so far. Overall, it has been a blessing! I have really needed the direction and creative environment.
More to come!
